An untouched West African Paradise of ancient forests, pristine beaches, and vibrant, crystal-clear waters

Príncipe sits at 1°N, 7°E, about as close to the centre of the world as it gets. The island holds some of the planet’s most extraordinary biodiversity, and it faces real pressure: on its environment, and on the opportunities open to the people who live there.

A Lively Mix: The Population of Príncipe

Most people on the island descend from Cape Verdeans, Angolans and Mozambicans who worked on the Portuguese-run plantations during and after slavery. They brought a blend of African cultures and traditions that shapes the island to this day.

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

In 2012, the efforts of HBD Príncipe, Mark Shuttleworth’s sustainable development company, led to Príncipe Island being designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, a testament to our commitment to preserving the island’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.

All the way through, we have been working collaboratively to develop the island in a responsible manner, creating opportunities for local communities while respecting their culture, traditions, and the fragile natural environment.
