Natural Dividend – A New Way to Protect Nature

A payment to the people who protect nature, decided by what the data shows

Conservation That Gives to Communities

Conservation usually works by restriction. Areas are fenced off, activities are banned, and the people who live closest to nature carry the cost.

The Natural Dividend does the opposite. Residents who commit to protecting the nature around them are paid for it. How much depends on what is actually measured: forest cover, deforestation, the way land is used. Satellites, drones and field teams supply the figures, and the figures decide the amount.

Príncipe Island in the Gulf of Guinea is the first place it is running. The first payment was made in February 2026.

The logic behind the programme

What we put in, what we expect to come out, and what has to be true in between.

TODO 10xmedia: Theory of Change as a responsive web module on the Natural Dividend page. Top row only: Inputs, Activities, Outputs, Outcomes, Impacts as five steps, each with icon, title and bullet points. Side by side with arrows between them on desktop, stacked on mobile. The Assumptions row does not go on this page. All text must be real HTML text, not part of an image file.

TODO 10xmedia: Navigation cards block here, two cards.
