The Natural Dividend is a payment to residents who commit to protecting the nature around them. Príncipe Island is where it is paid today, and the first payment was made on 23 February 2026.
Two different things are measured here, and it is worth keeping them apart.
The environmental side looks at the land, not at people. Forest cover and deforestation across the northern half of the island are measured against a 2025 baseline, using satellite imagery and drone surveys. The result is one figure for the area as a whole, and it decides whether the Northern Forests Integrity payment is made in full, halved, or not made at all.
The criteria that relate to a member, the type of dwelling and the zone they live in, are recorded when they join, based on the information they provide. Faya collects this in line with São Tomé and Príncipe’s data protection rules.
Measuring is what makes the payment checkable instead of a matter of judgement.
